Brief introduction of your research experience:

Dr. James Jianhui Zhang came to the U.S. in 1987 and studied for his master’s and doctoral degrees at Springfield College, Massachusetts. He began his academic career at the University of Houston in 1993, where he was a postdoctoral scholar for one year and a faculty member for seven years. He was recruited to work at the University of Florida in 2001-2011 and is now a member of the sport management faculty at the University of Georgia. 

Dr. Zhang’s primary research interests are applied measurement and/or applied studies examining sport consumer behavior. He has also studied sport leadership with a focus on formal and informal leadership associated with athletic program management. To date, he has authored or co-authored nine books, 40 book chapters, and over 160 research manuscripts and delivered over 400 research presentations at international and national conferences. 

He has obtained over $15 million as the principal investigator or a co-investigator from government agencies or private organizations. Between 2003 and 2011, he served as the principal investigator and the executive director of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Leadership Project that was funded by the United States Department of Education through Florida Department of Education. 

Dr. Zhang has served as the major advisor of over 20 Ph.D. students, with six of them being current students. He has also served on a large number of doctoral research committees as a committee member. Under Zhang’s guidance, his doctoral students are actively engaging in research activities, publishing research manuscripts, and presenting at scholarly conferences. 

Dr. Zhang has served the profession in various roles, such as the President of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), committee member of NASSM’s research grant program review committee, section head of NASSM conference abstract review panels, one of 12 founders of the Sport Marketing Association, sport management section editor of the Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, sport management section chair of Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, and chair of the Measurement and Evaluation Council of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). He is now serving as the chief editor of the International Journal of Sport Marketing and Sponsorship.

Dr. Zhang has received such prestigious recognitions as Fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, Fellow of NASSM, Dr. Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award (i.e., the highest honor of NASSM), Fellow of the Sport Marketing Association, J. B. Nash Scholar from AAHPERD, Career Center Recognition Award at the University of Georgia, the University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship, Honor Award by the International Olympic Committee for voluntarily serving at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Measurement and Evaluation Council Honor Award of the AAHPERD, Southern District Scholar of the AAHPERD, Teaching and Research Excellence Awards at the University of Houston, and most importantly, an Oriental Scholar and Honorary Dean of the College of Sport Economics and Management at the Shanghai University of Sport.
