Dr. Kandasamy Jayaraman

IIT Madras, India

Research Area:

Nanotechnology  · Combustion · Aerospace propulsion ·  Hydrogen generation  ·  Pyrolysis, combustion and gasification of coal, various biomasses (Miscanthus, Algae, Olive waste.,), petcoke, scrap tyres, refuse derive fuels (sewage sludge), oil shale and oil sands · Kinetics

Research Experience:

Prof. Dr. K. Jayaraman is presently working as Principal Project Officer at Department of Aerospace Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai. He has completed Master of Engineering (Aeronautical), at Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Madras Institute of Technology, Anna University, and doctorate from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, in the field of nano-particles production and characterisation and its application in aerospace propulsion. He was awarded for Sandwich Postdoc Fellowship from Science Technology and Service, Embassy of France, New Delhi, India. He performed the postdoc fellowship research at Institut de Combustion Aérothermique Réactivité et Environnement, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France. He has involved in generating hydrogen using clean technologies relevant for on demand applications, avoiding storage costs and risks is of great importance for fuel cell applications for various uses and transport applications using both fuel cells or internal combustion engines and micro gas turbines for both propulsion and energy generation uses. He has started intensive research activities at ICARE on the energetics of metal combustion (Al and Mg) for space propulsion applications and for future Mars Sample Return Missions using the in-situ propellant production concept (in this case the use of Martian CO2 to burn Al and Mg present in the Martian soil).

He has designed, fabricated and demonstrated the Pyro igniter and Pyro starter Development for Gas Turbine Engine Applications, the project sponsored by GTRE (Gas Turbine Research and Establishment), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), Govt of India (9.625 Lakhs). He has completed the project titled “Development of Design Methodology for Optimizing Squeeze Film Damper (SFD) for Aero Gas Turbine Engine and Experimental Verification Studies” under scheme of GATET (Gas Turbine Enabling Technology Initiative), sponsored by ARDB (Aeronautical Research and Development Board), DRDO, Govt of India (1.88 Crore). He has also contributed as co-investigator for the project titled “Enhancement of flame stabilization using porous media stabilizers for gas turbine engine applications”, sponsored by ARDB, DRDO, Govt of India (19.5 Lakhs). He is also handling the project as co-investigator sponsored by DST-TSDP scheme (20.7 Lakhs). He worked as senior researcher at ICARE, France, for working the “Optimizing gasification of high-ash content coals for electricity generation” (Optimash – France, Netherland, Turkey and India) an Indo-European collaborative project under seventh framework programme of European Union for 4 years.

In addition to that, he is also working in the field of renewable energy technology;  the pyrolysis, combustion and gasification studies of several carbonaceous materials, such as scrap tyres, biomass (Miscanthus, Olive waste, sewage sludge, etc.,) samples, petcoke, oil shale and oil sand sample characteristics to optimize its effective usage in system level configurations He has vast experience in renewable energy has showcased his abilities in publishing more than 20 peer reviewed journals internationally. He has visited several countries (France, Sweden, Netherland, Germany, Belgium, USA, China, Canada, Turkey) and presented 22 international conference papers.
